about
Centrifuge Design is a furniture and product design studio located in Toronto, founded in 2000 by furniture and product designer Stephen Hugo-Seinader, and research and marketing specialist Tracey Butler.
Our projects engage a wide range of materials, and benefit from a capacity for in-studio prototyping. We seek the highest standards in manufacturing partners, while offering the conceptual and material breadth to execute exceptional quality, market-driven flexibility, and the delivery of unique, sustainable product, anticipating customer demands in a constantly evolving marketplace.
We approach each project as a unique opportunity to examine the full set of challenges which are present for the particular design brief.
Stephen Hugo-Seinader was born in Toronto. He is the co-founder and principle of Centrifuge Design.
A graduate of the Sheridan College Furniture Design Program, Stephen has built upon a study of architecture, history, and philosophy, which form the basis for his ongoing examination of the aesthetic, technical, and socio-cultural aspects of design.
Stephen works in a wide range of materials and processes, both industrial and hand-worked, to realize his oeuvre: a synthesis of materials and form which aims to reflect the best of a modernist language, while addressing current themes in object design.
He teaches a range of subjects at Sheridan College, and has appeared as a guest lecturer and in critique for a number of architectural and design courses.
His work has been shown in Toronto, New York, and London. He is currently developing a range of projects exploring lightness of form and material, with an eye to sustainable sourcing of manufacturing. His inspirations happen through the interplay between new and traditional technologies, physical phenomena, and fresh aesthetic possibilities.
Tracey Butler is the co-founder of Centrifuge Design. Her role focuses on developing and maintaining the company's diverse client and press relationships.
A graduate of Ryerson University's Still Photography Program, Tracey brings a broad range of experience from a diverse, creative career. She has worked within the photographic trade, in interior design, television production, visual merchandising, and in consumer relations.
Her understanding of our customers' requirements, and attention to the needs of the international design media further enriches the results of all of our project aims.
Tracey welcomes the opportunity to work closely with clients and the press to expand the presence of each product within the trade in Canada, and across the international marketplace.
